Social Studies in the Classroom

On my and Sarah's first day in our practicum last week, we noticed social studies in progress... The classroom has a system set up as a community. They are called citizens and they have rules to be good citizens. They also earn money as they do good things and they are punished by giving up money. Afte 2 weeks, a store is opened so that the students can purchase items with the money that they earned. The students are also in groups as names of streets. This system is good for the students. They are learning what it's like to be a citizen and they don't even realize that they are part of a real community themselves.

I think having the classroom set up as a community is great and that it teaches the students responsibility.

That system is pretty neat that your in,, do any of the students show a bad attitude towards the system or are all the students eager to earn money and be on their best behavior?

What grade are you in? Do you know if the citizens came up with their rules or if they were all developed by the teacher? I like the idea of the response-cost system being used in your classroom because it shows the students the consequences first hand.

There are several rules, I'm not for sure if the students made them or if it was just the teacher Maggie. The students are 1st graders, so having so many rules seems overwhelming. And Justin... I don't think the students care if they earn or have to give away money. I am yet to see the practice really put to the test, but what I have seen it doesn't seem too beneficial. And to you Robin, I also think that this kind of set up is great, however I don't think it is working too well in this classroom!

I love this community that your CT has setup in her classroom. I think it is an extraordinary way to enage the students in a meaningful way in the subject of Social Studies. I would love to hear mored etails about how this community was formed and how it is regualted. I bet the students are really having a fun learning experience with this.
